Why metallic floors are a technique, not a product
Metallic mica is a fine pearlescent pigment that gets dispersed into a low viscosity clear resin. The pigment is only half the finish. The other half is what the installer does with the resin once it is on the floor, because the movement of the material is what creates the depth, the veining and the pattern.
That makes metallic floors the least repeatable finish in decorative concrete. The same pigment, the same resin and the same installer will not produce an identical floor twice. Sell it that way. Show a physical sample in person under the actual lighting, and set the expectation that the customer is buying a technique rather than a color chip.
The base underneath is not optional. Metallic resin is thin and translucent by design, so anything under it shows through. Most metallic floors are built over a solid pigmented base coat that both blocks the slab and provides the background tone the metallic plays against.
Mixing decides whether the pigment behaves. Disperse the powder fully into the resin before it hits the floor, since clumps of dry pigment show as dark spots that cannot be corrected afterward. Dose rate changes the intensity, and going heavier does not always look better.
Metallic floors are almost always topcoated. A clear over the top gives the wear surface and the UV protection, and it is also where any anti-slip additive goes, since a glossy metallic floor is slick when wet.
What to check before you order
- Order the whole floor's pigment in one batch, since mica shade can vary between production runs
- Confirm the pigment is compatible with the specific clear resin you plan to carry it in
- Plan a solid pigmented base coat underneath, since metallic resin is translucent
- Make a physical sample board and have the customer approve it in person
- Plan a clear topcoat over the metallic, and decide on anti-slip additive at the same time
