Grinder, tooling and vacuum: building a preparation system that works together

Surface preparation decides whether a floor lasts, and preparation is a system of three parts that have to match. A grinder that turns the tooling, diamond tooling matched to the concrete and the job, and a dust extractor sized to keep the dust out of the air. Buy those three separately without thinking about how they fit each other and one of them becomes the bottleneck.

Start with the machine. Grinder size is driven by square footage and by access. A large planetary machine covers ground fast and leaves a flatter floor, but it will not reach into a closet or up to a wall, which is why almost every crew also runs a hand grinder with a dust shroud for edges. Propane machines run without a cord and suit large open commercial floors with ventilation. Electric machines suit residential and interior work, and the power available at the site is a real constraint. If the site cannot supply what the machine needs, a generator becomes part of the preparation package rather than an accessory.

Tooling is where most of the money and most of the knowledge sits. The rule that trips up new crews is that the bond runs opposite to the concrete. Soft bond diamonds are for hard concrete, because a soft metal matrix wears away fast enough to keep exposing fresh diamond. Hard bond diamonds are for soft or abrasive concrete, because a soft slab would otherwise chew through the segment in an afternoon. Get it backward and you either glaze the segments on a hard slab and stop cutting, or burn through expensive tooling on a soft one. For removing coatings, glue and mastic, PCD tooling is the answer, since polycrystalline diamond shears the material off rather than trying to abrade it, and it does that far faster than a metal bond segment that just loads up with softened coating.

Dust control is not optional on this work. Dry grinding concrete generates respirable crystalline silica, and the way the trade controls it is at the tool, with a shroud or skirt sealing the head and a dust extractor with proper filtration pulling the dust straight out. That is also why extractor performance is judged on how it behaves with a loaded filter, not on a clean-filter number, and why pulse or automatic filter cleaning matters on a full day of grinding. Hose diameter, cuff fitment and skirt condition all affect airflow, and airflow is what actually captures the dust.

The rest of the category is application. Rollers, frames and covers, extension poles, squeegees and gauge rakes, spiked shoes, mixing paddles and buckets, chip brushes, scrapers and blades. These are consumables in practice, since roller covers are single-use on resin and blades dull fast. Stocking them by the job rather than by the item is what keeps a crew from stopping in the middle of a wet coat.

What to check before you order

  • Match grinder size to both the square footage and the access, and plan a hand grinder with a shroud for edges
  • Confirm the site can supply the power the machine needs, or plan a generator into the package
  • Choose diamond bond opposite to the slab: soft bond for hard concrete, hard bond for soft concrete
  • Confirm tooling fitment to your specific machine's plate or quick-change system before ordering
  • Size the dust extractor to the grinder and check hose diameter and cuff fitment through the whole run
  • Stock roller covers, blades and brushes as consumables, since resin work destroys them quickly

Machinery & Tools: common questions

What equipment do you need to prepare concrete for coating?

Preparing concrete for coating takes a diamond grinder sized to the floor, diamond tooling matched to the concrete hardness, a dust extractor with a shroud to capture silica dust, and a hand grinder with a dust shroud for edges and corners. Scrapers and a vacuum finish the cleanup.

Why is grinding better than acid etching for concrete preparation?

Diamond grinding is the reliable way to prepare concrete because it removes laitance, coatings and contamination while opening the surface to a consistent profile across the entire slab. Acid etching profiles unevenly, does nothing to oil or existing coatings, and leaves residue that must be neutralized and rinsed.

How do you control silica dust when grinding concrete?

Silica dust from concrete grinding is controlled at the tool, using a shroud or dust skirt that seals against the slab and a dust extractor with appropriate filtration pulling the dust away as it is created. Worn skirts, undersized hose and loaded filters all reduce capture, so they get checked daily.

What size concrete grinder do I need?

Concrete grinder size follows square footage and access. Large planetary machines cover open floors quickly and leave a flatter result, while smaller walk-behind and hand grinders reach edges, corners and tight rooms. Most crews run a large machine plus a hand grinder with a dust shroud rather than choosing one.

Do I need a generator to run a concrete grinder?

A generator is needed when the job site cannot supply the voltage and amperage a grinder and dust extractor draw together, which is common on residential and remote jobs. Size the generator to the combined running load of both machines plus startup surge, not to the grinder alone.

Can you use a regular shop vac for concrete grinding?

A standard shop vacuum is not a substitute for a dust extractor on concrete grinding. It lacks the filtration to handle fine silica dust, it lacks a filter cleaning system so airflow collapses as the filter loads, and it is not designed for the continuous dust volume grinding produces.
