Good to know

  • Shed-resistant PET bristle is worth it on clear topcoats, where a single loose fiber cures into the film.
  • Cut in before you place the field, then backroll into the wet edge so the cut line does not flash off separately.
  • Use one brush per mixed batch. Two-part material cures in the bristles and cleaning is not economical.
  • 3 in. is the control width. Step up to a 4 in. brush when you have long straight runs to cut in.

About the TCS Chip Brushes

TCS Chip Brushes are 3 inch brushes with soft, shed-resistant PET bristles and ergonomic wooden handles. On a floor they do the cut-in: the wall line, the perimeter, around posts, drain rings, thresholds and anchors, everywhere the roller cannot get a clean edge. Cut in first, then place and backroll the field into the wet edge so the two areas melt together instead of leaving a lap line.

Shed resistance is the reason to pick a better chip brush for coating work. Standard cheap bristle drops fibers, and a fiber that lands in a clear topcoat cures into the film permanently. The PET bristle here is built to hold together and lay material down evenly, which matters most on the perimeter of a clear coated or flake floor where the cut line is at eye level along the wall.

These brushes are compatible with latex and oil-based paints, stains, varnishes and similar finishes, so they carry over to trim, wall and touch-up work as well as floor coating.

The 3 inch width is the control size. It fits tight corners and follows an edge cleanly. Buy them in quantity and treat them as disposable, since a two-part coating cures in the bristles and cleaning costs more than the brush.

What it is used for

  • Cutting in the perimeter and wall line before rolling the field
  • Detailing around posts, drains, thresholds and floor anchors
  • Applying sealers, stains and varnish on small areas
  • Touch-up work on curbs, steps and equipment pads
  • Brushing primer into cracks and patched areas

Questions about this product

What makes a shed-resistant chip brush better for coatings?

Shed-resistant bristles stay in the brush instead of ending up in the coating. TCS Chip Brushes use soft PET bristle built to resist shedding, which matters on clear topcoats and flake floors where a loose fiber cures permanently into the film along the wall line and shows at eye level.

What can TCS chip brushes be used with?

TCS Chip Brushes are compatible with latex and oil-based paints, stains, varnishes and similar finishes, on wood, walls, metal and other surfaces. On floor work they are used for cutting in coatings and sealers around perimeters and details, and they carry over to trim and touch-up work.

Should I buy the 3 inch or a wider chip brush?

The 3 inch TCS Chip Brush is the control size. It follows an edge cleanly and fits tight corners around posts, drains and thresholds. Step up to a 4 inch brush when you have long straight wall runs to cut in and want to cover ground with fewer reloads.

How many chip brushes should I order?

Order chip brushes in quantity and treat them as disposable. You burn roughly one per mixed batch of two-part coating, since the material cures in the bristles and solvent cleaning costs more than the brush. Running out mid-pour is a common way to lose a wet edge.
