Good to know

  • Snap a fresh segment whenever the blade drags. A dull blade is what leaves a ragged edge at a taped transition.
  • Snap segments into a container, never onto a slab you are about to coat. A blade fragment in a wet film is a defect and a hazard.
  • 9mm is for light detail work. Heavy scraping and thick material need a wider blade or a scraper.
  • Confirm the replacement blades you buy are 9mm. The other common snap-off width is 18mm and it will not fit.

About the Olfa Cutting Tool

The 9mm snap-off is the knife that lives in a coating installer's pocket. It trims masking tape and plastic, opens film and bags, cuts sheeting for containment, scores the edge of a coating at a transition, and shaves the fuzz off a taped line before the topcoat goes on. None of that is heavy cutting, which is exactly why 9mm is the right width for it.

The snap-off design is the point. Coating work dulls a blade quickly, especially cutting through tape loaded with cured resin or scoring across a flake-textured surface, and a dull blade is what makes a ragged line at a transition. Snapping off a segment gives you a fresh sharp edge in a second without unpacking anything, so there is no reason to keep working with a bad one.

The 9mm width is nimble and gets into tight spots, but it is not a demolition tool. For scraping cured coating or cutting heavy material, use a scraper or a wider blade. Snap segments off into a container rather than onto the floor, because a broken blade segment underfoot on a slab you are about to coat is both a hazard and a defect in the finished film.

What it is used for

  • Trimming masking tape and plastic sheeting
  • Scoring coating edges at transitions and thresholds
  • Cutting containment film and opening material bags
  • General cut-in and detail work during prep

Questions about this product

What is a 9mm snap-off knife used for on a coating job?

An Olfa 9mm snap-off cutting tool handles the light detail work on a coating job: trimming masking tape and plastic, cutting containment sheeting, opening material bags and scoring coating edges at transitions. The narrow blade gets into tight spots that a wider utility knife cannot.

How do I change the blade?

A snap-off knife does not need a blade change in the usual sense. When the tip dulls you snap off the used segment and advance a fresh sharp edge, which takes seconds. Once every segment is used, the whole blade strip is replaced with a new 9mm blade.

Will 18mm blades fit this knife?

No, this is a 9mm cutting tool and it takes 9mm snap-off blades only. The two common snap-off widths, 9mm and 18mm, are not interchangeable, so confirm the width when ordering replacement blades or you will end up with a strip that does not fit.

Is a snap-off knife strong enough for scraping coating?

A 9mm snap-off is a detail cutter and not a scraper, so scraping cured coating, adhesive or heavy material will snap segments unpredictably and puts the user at real risk of injury. Use a dedicated scraper blade for removal work instead.
