Good to know

  • Four inches is the useful width for hand scraping. Wider blades spread your weight and ride over material instead of cutting under it.
  • A dull edge burnishes residue into the slab. Change blades rather than pushing harder.
  • Confirm the blade fits your holder before ordering.
  • Check silica and coating removal considerations before generating dust on a floor of unknown history.

About the Red Devil Edge Blade

A 4 inch edge blade is the working width for hand scraping on floor prep. It is wide enough to move material at a reasonable rate and narrow enough to keep pressure concentrated where you need it, which is the balance you want when you are chasing adhesive residue, cured drips, coating overspray or the loose chip left behind after a flake broadcast.

Wider is not automatically better on this work. A blade that is too wide spreads your body weight across too much blade and starts riding over the material instead of getting under it. Four inches lets you get an edge under a stubborn spot and stay there. It also fits into the areas around drains, jambs and equipment bases where a floor scraper cannot work.

Keep the edge fresh. A rounded blade skates across residue and burnishes it into the concrete, which leaves a contaminated surface a coating will not bond to. Confirm the blade fits the holder you own before ordering, and check silica and coating removal considerations before making dust on an unknown floor.

What it is used for

  • Scraping cured coating drips and runs
  • Removing adhesive and mastic residue in tight areas
  • Cleaning up loose flake after a broadcast cures
  • Detail prep around drains, jambs and equipment bases

Questions about this product

What is a 4 inch edge blade used for?

A 4 inch edge blade is a hand scraping blade used during floor prep to remove cured coating drips, adhesive and mastic residue, overspray and loose flake. The width is a working compromise: wide enough to move material and narrow enough to keep pressure under a stubborn spot.

Why not use a wider blade?

A wider scraper blade spreads your body weight across more blade, so it tends to ride over hard residue rather than getting under it. A 4 inch edge blade concentrates pressure and also reaches into areas around drains, jambs and equipment bases that a floor scraper cannot.

How often should the blade be replaced?

Replace an edge blade as soon as it stops cutting and starts skating. A dull blade burnishes contamination into the concrete instead of lifting it, and a burnished, contaminated slab is a bond failure waiting to happen once the coating goes down over it.

Can I use an edge blade on a coated floor without damaging it?

A 4 inch edge blade is aggressive enough to gouge a cured coating if it is driven at a steep angle. Keep the blade low and let the edge shear the drip or residue off, and test in a hidden area first when the surrounding coating is staying in place.
