Good to know

  • The 6 inch width bears on solid slab either side of the joint, which is what lets you shave filler flush instead of following the dip.
  • Joint filler is shaved in a short window once it has set enough to hold shape. Have the knife in hand before you place material.
  • A proud or sunken joint fill shows through a flake floor. Chip hides color variation, not a change in the plane of the slab.
  • Clean the blade before material cures. A nicked or caked edge cannot pull a clean line.

About the Dynamics Joint Putty Knife

A 6 inch joint knife is the tool for joint and crack work ahead of a coating. It presses semi-rigid filler and patch material into control joints and cracks, works out the air pockets, and pulls the surplus flush with the slab so nothing sits proud where a roller or a squeegee has to pass over it later.

The width is the point. Six inches spans a joint and bears on solid concrete on both sides, so you can shave filler flush in one pass instead of following the dip and leaving a low line that will telegraph straight through the finished floor. On a flake floor a proud or sunken joint fill is one of the few defects the chip will not hide, because it changes the plane rather than the color.

Timing matters more than technique. Most joint fillers are shaved once they have set enough to hold shape but before they harden fully, and that window is short. Have the knife ready before you place the filler, keep it clean, and wipe it down before material cures on the blade, since a nicked or resin-caked edge stops pulling a clean line.

What it is used for

  • Pressing joint filler into control joints before coating
  • Working patch and repair material into cracks and spalls
  • Shaving joint filler flush with the slab
  • Filling and smoothing small defects during prep

Questions about this product

What is a joint putty knife used for before coating a floor?

A 6 inch joint putty knife is used to press joint filler and patch material into control joints and cracks, work out air pockets, and shave the surplus flush with the slab so nothing sits proud where a squeegee or roller has to pass over it later.

Why a 6 inch blade instead of a narrow one?

A 6 inch (150mm) knife spans a control joint and bears on solid concrete on both sides, which lets you shave the filler flush in one pass. A narrow blade follows the dip into the joint and leaves a low line that telegraphs through the finished floor.

Will flake hide a bad joint fill?

No, a flake broadcast hides color and texture variation in a slab but it does not hide a change in the plane of the floor, so a joint fill left proud or sunken still shows through the finished coating. Shave it flush during prep.

How do I keep the knife usable?

Clean the blade before joint filler or resin cures on it. A caked or nicked edge stops pulling a clean flush line, and on shaved joint work the quality of the edge is what determines whether the fill sits level with the slab or leaves a visible ridge.
