- The notch meters the material and the roller finishes it. A notched squeegee pass that is never back-rolled leaves ridges that telegraph through the finished floor.
- Choose the notch from the wet mil thickness your coating is specified at, not from how the floor looks while you are spreading.
- Flat stiff moves heavy material and holds a line. Flat flex follows the slab and lays a thinner, more uniform pass for topcoats.
- Blades wear. A rounded notch stops metering accurately, so keep a spare blade for long pours rather than finishing a floor on a worn one.

Flat blades come in stiff and flex. Flat stiff pushes material and holds a line, which is what you want when you are moving a heavy 100% solids coating across a slab or working out a low spot. Flat flex conforms to the surface and lays a thinner, more even pass, which suits topcoats and lighter films over an already flat floor.
Notched blades are the ones that control mil thickness directly, and they are specified by the wet mil range they deliver: 5 to 7, 8 to 12, 15 to 20, 25 to 30, 40 to 45 and 50 to 60. Pick the notch that matches the film your coating is specified at, then back-roll to break the ridges and even the surface. The notch meters the material, the roller finishes it. That combination is how a crew gets a consistent floor instead of an average of thick and thin passes.
Match the width to the space. A 24 inch blade covers open slab faster and an 18 inch is easier to control around obstacles.
