Good to know

  • Put them on at the edge of the slab and take them off at the tape line. Spikes loaded with wet resin will mark every surface you cross afterward.
  • Lift your foot straight up instead of dragging it. A dragged spike tears a line in the film that will not always flow back out.
  • Check the straps before every pour. A strap that lets go in the middle of a wet floor is a fall onto uncured coating.
  • Spikes leave marks in a coating that is past its open time. Once the film has started to gel, stay off it.

About the Spike Shoes Clip-On

Spike shoes are what let you stand in the middle of a wet floor. The spikes carry your weight on points small enough that the coating flows back and closes behind you, so you can walk into the field to broadcast flake, back-roll, chase a holiday or reach a low spot instead of working yourself into a corner from the edges.

On a flake floor they are not optional. A full broadcast has to be thrown from inside the wet area, and the installer throwing chip has to keep moving across the whole field while the base coat is still open. The same applies to metallic work, where the pattern is created by working the wet film from within it, and to any pour where a squeegee pass has to be back-rolled evenly.

The clip-on style straps over the work boots you already have on, which matters more than it sounds. You can get them on at the edge of the slab, work the pour, and pull them off at the tape line without changing footwear or tracking resin into the next room. Walk deliberately, lift straight up rather than dragging, and step off onto cardboard or a rag so you are not carrying spikes full of epoxy across finished work.

What it is used for

  • Broadcasting flake into a wet base coat
  • Back-rolling a squeegeed epoxy or polyaspartic floor
  • Working a metallic floor from inside the wet film
  • Reaching low spots and holidays without stepping off the field

Questions about this product

What are spike shoes used for on an epoxy floor?

Clip-on spike shoes let an installer walk on freshly applied coating without marking it. The spikes carry weight on small points so the wet film flows back and closes behind each step, which is what makes broadcasting flake and back-rolling from inside the wet area possible.

Do spike shoes leave marks in the coating?

Not while the coating is still open and flowing. Spike shoes rely on the wet film self-healing behind the spike, so they work during the application window and leave visible holes once the material has begun to gel. Stay off a floor that has started to set.

Do they fit over work boots?

Yes, these are clip-on spike shoes, meaning they strap over the work boots you are already wearing rather than replacing them, so you can put them on at the slab edge, work the pour, and pull them off at the tape line without tracking resin.

Do I need spike shoes for a flake floor?

For any full broadcast flake floor, effectively yes. The chip has to be thrown from inside the wet base coat across the whole field while it is still open, and there is no way to reach the middle of a floor from the perimeter without walking on wet coating.
