Good to know

  • Covers are consumables on resin work. Plan to throw the cover away after the pour rather than trying to clean cured epoxy out of it.
  • Replacement legs are sold separately, so a bent leg does not mean scrapping the frame.
  • Confirm the pole thread against the extension poles you already run.
  • Back-roll in one direction and finish in a consistent pattern. Random cross-rolling on a flake base coat shows up as uneven chip coverage.

About the Wooster Big Ben®

The Big Ben is an 18 inch roller frame, and on a coatings crew it is the back-rolling tool. Once a squeegee has metered material onto the slab, somebody has to break the ridges, even the film and release the air before it kicks, and doing that with a 9 inch frame on a two car garage is how you run out of open time.

Eighteen inches is the practical width for floor work. It covers ground fast enough to keep up with a squeegee operator on a 100% solids system, and it is still narrow enough to follow a slab that is not perfectly flat. On flake floors the back-roll pass sets how evenly the base coat sits before chip goes into it, so an inconsistent roll shows up in the finished floor as thin spots in the broadcast.

Treat the frame as a durable and the cover as a consumable. Covers get thrown away after almost every pour because resin cures in them. Legs and frame parts are available separately, which is worth knowing before you scrap a whole frame over one bent component. Take the pole thread into account so the frame works with the extension poles you already own.

What it is used for

  • Back-rolling epoxy base coats before a flake broadcast
  • Rolling polyaspartic and polyurethane topcoats
  • Applying primers and sealers on open floor
  • Any pour where a 9 inch frame cannot keep up with the open time

Questions about this product

What is an 18 inch roller frame used for on a floor?

The Wooster Big Ben 18 inch roller frame is used to back-roll floor coatings after a squeegee has spread them. The extra width covers ground fast enough to keep up with the open time of a 100% solids epoxy, which a standard 9 inch frame usually cannot do.

Can I reuse the roller cover?

On resin work, usually not. Covers used in epoxy, polyaspartic or polyurea are treated as consumables because the material cures in the nap and cleaning it with solvent is rarely worth the labor or the risk of contaminating the next floor. Budget a fresh cover per pour.

Are replacement parts available for the Big Ben frame?

Yes, replacement legs for the Wooster Big Ben roller frame are sold separately, so a damaged or bent leg does not mean scrapping the entire frame, which is worth knowing before you throw a frame away. Keeping a spare on the truck is cheap insurance.

Does it take an extension pole?

The Big Ben frame is designed for pole work, which is how back-rolling a floor is actually done. Check the thread against the extension poles you already own so the frame and pole pair up without an adapter, and pick pole length by the size of floors you typically run.
