Good to know
- Soft bond for hard concrete, hard bond for soft concrete. This is backwards from what most people assume and it is the number one reason tooling gets blamed for a bad grind.
- Rotation matters. These are clockwise. Fitting the wrong rotation segment changes how the segment presents to the slab and shortens its life.
- Order in full sets. Mixing worn and new segments across a plate loads the machine unevenly and leaves swirl in the floor.
- Test in a corner before committing to a full slab. Ten minutes in an out of the way area tells you whether the bond is right, and no data sheet can.
- PCD strips coatings, diamond polishes concrete. Do not try to remove thick epoxy with a polishing bond, you will glaze the segment.
About the ASL / Lavina Diamonds
This is diamond tooling made to fit ASL and Lavina grinders. That is the sentence most tooling listings never write. Fitment is the whole question with grinder tooling, because a segment that will not seat on your plate is scrap no matter how good the diamond is. These are supplied in ASL and Lavina fitment and in clockwise rotation, so verify your machine's plate pattern and rotation direction before ordering.
Bond selection is where most crews get it backwards, and it is worth being blunt about. Soft bond goes on hard concrete. Hard bond goes on soft concrete. The bond has to erode fast enough to keep exposing fresh diamond, so on hard, dense, power-troweled slab a soft bond releases diamond at the right rate and keeps cutting. On soft or green concrete, a soft bond wears away far faster than the diamond dulls and you burn through tooling for nothing, which is why a hard bond belongs there. Soft, medium and hard bonds are offered so you can match the slab in front of you.
Segment shape changes how the tool behaves, not just how it looks. Double button and double hexagon segments spread the contact area and run smoother for general grinding and polishing steps. Shark tooth is the aggressive option for fast stock removal and coating attack. PCD, including double PCD configurations, is the choice for stripping coatings, mastic, glue and thick sealer, because polycrystalline diamond shears the material off rather than trying to abrade through it.
Buy tooling as a sequence, not as a single item. A working setup normally means an aggressive removal step, one or two intermediate metal bond steps, and then the transitional or resin steps for the finish you are selling.
