- PCD removes coatings, diamond grinds concrete. Running conventional diamond segments into a soft coating glazes them over and wastes the set.
- Fitment and rotation both matter. Confirm your plate pattern, segment count and whether your heads turn clockwise or counter clockwise before you order.
- Plan a grinding pass after the removal pass. PCD leaves a clean but scored slab, and a coating going back down needs proper profile.
- Test a small area on an unknown floor. Layer count and adhesive type vary bay to bay on old buildings and change your production rate completely.
- Bush hammer is a texturing tool, not a stripping tool. Use it when you want to fracture the surface, not when you want a coating gone.

PCD is the tool of choice for removal work. Polycrystalline diamond has a flat cutting edge that shears coating, mastic, glue, paint and thick sealer away from the slab instead of grinding through it. Conventional diamond segments loaded with soft coating just glaze over and stop cutting, which is the single most common mistake on a removal job. Button PCD spreads the cut and runs smoother where a fully aggressive PCD is chattering or gouging.
Bush hammer tooling does a different job entirely. Instead of removing a coating it fractures the surface of the concrete to create a heavy texture, used for exposing aggregate, creating slip resistance, or opening a very tight slab that will not take profile any other way. Buy it for texture, not for stripping.
Expect to follow a removal pass with a grinding pass. PCD leaves the slab clean but scored, and if a coating is going back down it needs a metal bond or diamond step afterward to open the concrete evenly and produce the profile the coating manufacturer asks for. On an old floor of unknown history, run a small test area first. Coatings that came off easy in one bay have a habit of being three layers thick in the next.
