Dynamic Putty Knife

The flex choice is a real decision, not a preference. A flexible blade follows the surface and feathers patch material into a slab without leaving ridges, which is what you want when you are filling small spalls and pinholes ahead of a coating. A stiff blade transfers force to the edge, which is what you want for scraping cured material, chasing out a crack, or driving thick patch compound into a void. Crews that do both usually own both.

Width follows the same logic. The 3 inch blade covers ground and lays material flat. The 1.5 inch blade gets into tight spots, works corners and edges, and fits where a wide blade bridges instead of contacting.

Carbon steel takes and holds an edge better than the soft stainless blades on economy knives, which matters when the knife spends half its life scraping. Keep it clean and dry between uses, because carbon steel will rust if it sits in a wet bucket. Wipe resin off before it sets rather than trying to grind it off later.
