Good to know

  • Brush first, vacuum second. Brushing loosens material and then leaves it in the joint if you do not follow with a vacuum pass.
  • Keep a separate brush for resin-covered tools. A brush loaded with partly cured epoxy contaminates the next crack you clean.
  • Wire brushes wear flat quickly on concrete. The two pack is a working supply, not a lifetime purchase.
  • Wear eye protection. Wire strands break off under load and they travel.

About the Mini Wire Brush

A pack of two mini wire brushes, sized for the detail work that a broom and a vacuum cannot do. On concrete coating jobs these live in a pouch and come out constantly: scrubbing loose material out of a crack before it gets filled, cleaning a saw-cut joint, clearing an anchor hole, knocking cured resin off a mixer shaft, or cleaning threads on a plate bolt.

The reason they matter more here than on other trades is adhesion. A crack repair or a joint fill only holds if the surface it bonds to is sound and clean. Dust, loose laitance and old sealer left in the bottom of a joint are exactly where the repair lets go first, usually a few months after the customer paid for it. Thirty seconds with a wire brush and then a vacuum pass is the difference.

Buy two-packs rather than one brush. Wire brushes get lost, they get left on the floor and coated over, and they wear flat fast on concrete. Keeping a spare on the truck costs almost nothing.

Use them dry on concrete prep and keep a separate brush for cleaning tools that have had resin on them. A brush loaded with partly cured epoxy will transfer that material into the next crack you clean, which defeats the whole point.

What it is used for

  • Cleaning cracks and saw-cut joints before filling
  • Clearing dust and debris from anchor and dowel holes
  • Removing cured resin from mixer shafts and tool threads
  • General detail cleanup on prep work ahead of coating

Questions about this product

What comes in this mini wire brush pack?

This is a pack of two mini wire brushes, sized for detail cleanup work on concrete prep and coating jobs, which means cracks, saw-cut joints, anchor holes and tool cleaning rather than broad surface scrubbing. Two brushes lets you keep one clean for concrete and one for resin-covered tools.

Why brush a crack before filling it?

Brushing a crack or joint before filling removes dust, loose laitance and old sealer from the bonding surface, and that contamination is exactly where a crack repair fails first, usually months after the job is complete. Follow the brush with a vacuum pass so the loosened material actually leaves the joint.

Can I use these brushes to clean epoxy off tools?

A mini wire brush works well for knocking partly cured resin off mixer shafts, tool threads and plate hardware, though fully cured epoxy is far harder to remove than fresh material. Dedicate one brush of the pair to tool cleanup so resin does not transfer into concrete work.

Are wire brushes enough to prepare concrete for coating?

Mini wire brushes are not enough to prepare concrete for a coating, because they handle detail cleanup only and a slab needs mechanical profiling with a grinder and the proper diamond tooling to reach the concrete surface profile the coating manufacturer specifies. Use the brush for cracks and joints.
