That covers a lot of ground on a coating job. Small hand tools, detail shroud ports, crack chasers, dust collection attachments on smaller equipment and shop vacuum accessories often present a 1 inch fitting. Rather than buy a second hose, you step the end down.
Understand what a reducer does to airflow. Necking a 2 inch line down to 1 inch cuts the cross-sectional area dramatically, so the volume of air you can move through it drops accordingly while velocity climbs. That tradeoff is fine and often preferred for small tools, where high velocity in a small line is what keeps dust moving. It is not fine if you try to run a large shroud or a floor tool through a reduced connection, because you will starve the tool and dust will escape at the source.
Make sure the joint is tight at both ends. A reducer that is loose on either side leaks air at the connection, and a leak at a fitting behaves exactly like a clogged filter, it drops the suction available at the tool. Tape the joint if it will not seat firmly. Keep a spare in the truck, because these get lost and left behind more than any other vacuum part.
