Good to know

  • A respirator only protects when it seals. Facial hair on the sealing surface breaks the seal no matter how good the mask is.
  • Cartridges are consumables. Replace them when you can smell or taste solvent through the mask rather than trying to extend them.
  • Seal the mask in a bag between jobs so the cartridge is not absorbing shop air while it sits.
  • Order one per crew member. Sharing a mask between installers defeats the fit.

About the 3M Performance Respirator

The 3M Performance Respirator is a reusable half mask kit that protects against particles and organic vapors. It is the piece of gear that belongs on the truck before the first pail is cracked, because polyaspartic, polyurea and solvented urethane topcoats put vapor in the air fast in a closed garage or a tight commercial space.

This version is built on the larger face size, which matters if your standard mask leaves gaps at the cheek or the chin. A respirator only works when it seals, so face fit drives the buying decision more than anything else on the spec sheet. The kit ships with the cartridge and filter combination for organic vapor and particulate, and the wide field of view keeps you able to see the leading edge while you cut in.

Use it for spray application, for solvent cleanup, for grinding and prep dust, and for pesticide work if the mask does double duty on the property. Cartridges are consumable. Once you smell or taste the solvent through the mask, the cartridge is spent and needs to be replaced, not aired out.

Store the mask in a sealed bag between jobs. A cartridge left open on a shelf keeps loading with whatever is in the shop air and gives you a shorter service life on the next floor.

What it is used for

  • Spray application of polyaspartic and urethane topcoats
  • Rolling solvent based coatings in enclosed garages
  • Solvent cleanup and equipment washdown
  • Grinding and shot blast prep dust
  • Pesticide and general shop chemical handling

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

Do I need a respirator for epoxy floor coatings?

Yes for most coating work. The 3M Performance Respirator covers particulates and organic vapors, which is the combination you want when rolling or spraying epoxy, polyaspartic, polyurea and urethane in a garage or an enclosed commercial space. Ventilation alone rarely does the job in a closed bay.

What is this respirator rated for?

The 3M Performance Respirator is rated for particles and organic vapors, which is the pairing coating work calls for. That covers solvent vapor coming off the coating during application plus the dust generated by grinding, shot blasting and sanding during floor prep. Refer to the 3M packaging for the exact cartridge designation.

Will this respirator fit a large face?

This 3M Performance Respirator kit is built on the larger face size, so it suits installers who find standard masks leave a gap at the cheek or jaw. Fit is the whole point of a respirator, since a mask that does not seal to skin gives you no protection at all regardless of the cartridge.

How often do I replace the cartridges?

Replace the cartridges on the 3M Performance Respirator as soon as you can smell or taste solvent through the mask, or when breathing resistance climbs on the particulate side. Cartridge life depends on vapor concentration, humidity and how long you are in the space, so it varies job to job.
