Good to know
- Polyaspartic is far less forgiving than epoxy on timing. Once the working time is gone you cannot rewet an edge, so plan the pull pattern and keep a wet edge across the whole floor.
- Scrape and vacuum the flake bed thoroughly before topcoating. Loose chip left in the bed gets picked up by the roller and drags through the clear.
- Humidity accelerates polyaspartic cure. A humid summer afternoon will shorten your practical working time compared to a dry day even at the same temperature.
- Light foot traffic is not vehicle traffic. Tires, and particularly hot tires and turning tires in a garage, need the longer cure window listed on the technical data sheet before the floor is loaded.
- Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight quotes on pallet orders.
About the Aras Polyaspartic 85% Solids Kit
Aras Poly 85 Slow is the clear topcoat that goes over a finished flake floor. It is a two component polyaspartic polyurea at 85 percent solids, mixed 1 to 1 and sold in 2 gallon kits, and it was built specifically for crews who need working time rather than raw speed.
The number that matters is the 45 minute working time. Standard polyaspartics are far less forgiving than epoxy, and a fast cure clear can skin over on you halfway across a three car garage. Poly 85 Slow gives you 45 minutes with a long pot life, and it still allows light foot traffic in under 24 hours. That combination is what lets a crew top a large residential floor in one pass without lap lines and still hand the space back the next day.
In system position this is the final coat. Under it goes a cured, scraped and vacuumed flake base coat, or a solid color or metallic body coat. Nothing goes over it. It is high gloss and crystal clear, with the low viscosity that gives good penetration into the flake bed and strong bonding, plus long term resistance to abrasion, impact and wear. The blend of low odor, UV stable solvents means it can be used in occupied houses and it will not yellow the way an epoxy clear will.
The real decision on a topcoat is cure speed against working time. If you are running one day installs in cold weather you want a fast cure polyaspartic. If you are topping large floors, working in heat, or you want the surface to stay open long enough to pull a clean edge, Poly 85 Slow is the correct choice.
What it is used for
- Clear topcoat over residential flake garage floors
- Topcoat over metallic and solid color epoxy body coats
- Large commercial floors that must be coated in one continuous pass
- Occupied homes and tenant spaces where odor is a constraint
- Hot weather installs where a fast cure clear would flash off
Before you order
Work out how much you need
The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.
How much material do I need?
Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.
- Floor area
- 400 sq ft
- Base coat
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Topcoat (1 pass)
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Flake
- about 8 x 25 lb boxes
Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.
Questions about this product
What is the mix ratio for Aras Polyaspartic 85%?
Aras Poly 85 Slow mixes at a 1 to 1 ratio and is supplied in 2 gallon kits, so one gallon of part A to one gallon of part B. Mix only what you can place inside the working time, and box the components thoroughly before you pour, because a poorly mixed polyaspartic will show as soft spots.
How long is the pot life and working time on Aras Poly 85 Slow?
Aras Poly 85 Slow is a slow cure polyaspartic with a long pot life and a generous 45 minute working time, which is unusually long for the class. That window shrinks as temperature and humidity climb, so on a hot, humid day plan on placing material faster than the stated figure.
When can you walk on a floor topcoated with Aras Poly 85?
Aras Poly 85 Slow allows light foot traffic in under 24 hours, which is what makes it workable on fast turnaround residential jobs. Vehicle traffic, hot tires and heavy rolling loads need longer, and that full return to service window is listed on the technical data sheet.
What does Aras Poly 85 go over?
Aras Poly 85 Slow is a topcoat and goes over a cured flake broadcast base coat that has been scraped and vacuumed, or over a solid color or metallic epoxy body coat. It is the final coat in the system, so nothing goes over it. Its low viscosity helps it penetrate and lock down a flake bed.
Will Aras Poly 85 yellow in sunlight?
Aras Poly 85 Slow is formulated with UV stable solvents and is a polyaspartic polyurea, a class that holds clarity under UV far better than epoxy. That is exactly why clear polyaspartic is used as the topcoat over epoxy body coats on floors near windows, in showrooms and in exterior adjacent spaces.
Should I use the slow cure or a fast cure polyaspartic?
Choose Aras Poly 85 Slow when you need working time: large floors, hot weather, occupied spaces, or crews who want a clean wet edge without racing. Choose a fast cure polyaspartic when you are doing one day installs, working in cold conditions, or need the floor back in service quickly.
