Good to know
- The 99% grade matters when water is the problem. Lower grades carry more water and leave more behind on the surface.
- This is a cleaner, not prep. It does not etch, it does not profile, and it will not degrease an oil-contaminated slab. Grind the floor for bond.
- Do not thin coatings with isopropyl alcohol unless the coating's own technical data sheet names it.
- Flammable. Ventilate, keep away from ignition sources, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep the container closed. Ground shipping rules apply to solvents. Call 817-676-6793 for bulk or freight.
About the Crown Isopropyl Alcohol 99%
Crown Isopropyl Alcohol 99% in a 1 gallon container is a cleaning solvent with a low water content, which is what the 99% grade buys you. It flashes off cleanly and leaves very little behind, so it is the wipe you use when a surface has to be free of residue before something bonds to it.
On coating work that is its role. It cleans light dust, handling oils and film off surfaces and tools, cleans up small resin drips and equipment before they set, and works as a general shop cleaner where a manufacturer's instructions call for an alcohol wipe. Because it carries so little water, it is also preferred over lower grades anywhere trapped water would cause a problem.
It is a cleaner, and only a cleaner. Isopropyl alcohol is not an etchant and it creates no mechanical profile, so it does nothing toward preparing a slab for coating. That job belongs to diamond grinding. It is not a degreaser for an oil-saturated floor either, and wiping a contaminated slab with it will mostly redistribute the contamination. And it is not a thinner. Do not add it to a resin system unless that specific coating's technical data sheet names it.
For stubborn cured resin or heavier cleanup, acetone is more aggressive and flashes faster. Isopropyl alcohol is the gentler and cleaner-leaving option, which is why crews keep both on the truck.
It is flammable. Use it with ventilation, keep it away from ignition sources, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep the container closed between pours. Solvents are regulated for shipment, so ground shipping rules apply to this item. Call 817-676-6793 for bulk quantities or freight orders.
What it is used for
- Low-residue wipe of surfaces before a repair or coating step
- Cleaning handling oils and light film off tools and parts
- Shop cleanup where a data sheet calls for an alcohol wipe
- Applications where trapped water from a lower grade alcohol is a problem
Questions about this product
What is 99% isopropyl alcohol used for in coating work?
Crown isopropyl alcohol 99% is a cleaning solvent used to wipe dust, handling oils and light film off surfaces and tools so the next step bonds cleanly. The high grade carries very little water, so it flashes off fast and leaves minimal residue behind.
Is isopropyl alcohol better than acetone for cleanup?
They do different jobs. Acetone is more aggressive and flashes faster, which suits removing uncured resin and heavy tool cleanup. Isopropyl alcohol 99% is the gentler, low-residue option for wiping surfaces clean before a repair or a coating step. Most crews carry both.
Can I use isopropyl alcohol to prep concrete for epoxy?
No. Isopropyl alcohol cleans, but it does not etch concrete or create the mechanical profile a coating needs, and it will not remove oil driven into a slab. Diamond grind the floor for the bond and use a dedicated degreaser where the concrete is contaminated.
Why choose 99% instead of 70% isopropyl alcohol?
The 99% grade of isopropyl alcohol contains far less water, so it evaporates faster and leaves less moisture and residue on the surface. That matters wherever trapped water would interfere with adhesion, cure or a subsequent repair step.
How does isopropyl alcohol ship?
Isopropyl alcohol is a flammable solvent regulated for transport, so ground shipping rules apply to this 1 gallon container. For bulk quantities or a freight shipment, call Twin Coating Supplies at 817-676-6793 and we will confirm routing before the order is placed.
