Crown 1gal Denatured Alcohol

Crown Denatured Alcohol in a 1 gallon container is a general purpose cleaning solvent. On a coating job it is a cleaner, not a thinner for your resin and not a substitute for surface prep. Knowing which of those three jobs a solvent does is most of the argument in a supply house, and this one is firmly in the cleaning column.

Crown lists it as an excellent glass cleaner when diluted as directed, and as a cleaner for metal parts, printing ink rubber rolls and typewriters. Shellac cut with this solvent gives a smooth film with high gloss and good color, and it is listed as a good primer for floors, wood, furniture and plaster in that shellac role. It also cleans shellac brushes after use. As a fuel it produces a hot, clean, smokeless and odorless flame with a maximum amount of heat.

Where it does not belong is worth stating plainly. Denatured alcohol is not a degreaser for an oil-saturated slab, and wiping a contaminated floor with it moves the oil around rather than removing it. It is not an etchant and creates no mechanical profile. It is not the right thinner for epoxies or polyaspartics unless that specific coating's technical data sheet names it, and using the wrong solvent to thin a resin can wreck cure, gloss and film build. When a data sheet calls for a solvent wipe, use the one the manufacturer names.

It is flammable. Work with real ventilation, keep it away from ignition sources including pilot lights and space heaters, wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, and keep the container closed when you are not pouring. Rags soaked in solvent need to be handled and disposed of properly rather than piled in a bucket in a warm truck.
