Good to know

  • Brush and then vacuum. Wire brushing loosens debris but leaves it sitting in the crack, and filler placed on that debris is exactly what telegraphs through a finished floor.
  • A wire brush is spot prep, not floor prep. Preparing a slab for a coating is a diamond grinding job.

About the Hyde Wire Brush

The Hyde wire brush is a hand brush for cleaning cracks, control joints, patch areas and tools. On a coating job its real value is in the two minutes before a repair goes in.

A patch fails for one of two reasons. Either the substrate was moving, or the substrate was dirty. Wire brushing a crack or a chipped joint edge knocks out loose crumbs, laitance and dust so the filler grabs sound concrete instead of sitting on debris. That is the difference between a repair that disappears under a finished floor and one that shows back up as a line across a customer's garage.

It also cleans dried material off trowels, mixing paddles, spike shoes and grinder plates, which is the second job every crew uses one for.

Brush, then vacuum. Wire brushing loosens material and leaves it in the crack. If you do not vacuum it out, all you did was make a mess with better distribution.

What it is used for

  • Cleaning out cracks and control joints before filling
  • Prepping patch areas so filler bonds to sound concrete
  • Removing loose laitance and crumbs from spalled areas
  • Cleaning dried material off trowels, paddles and tooling

Questions about this product

Why wire brush a crack before repairing it?

Wire brushing a crack or joint with a Hyde wire brush removes loose crumbs, laitance and dust so the repair material bonds to sound concrete. Filler placed over debris does not hold, and a failed patch telegraphs back through the finished coating as a visible line.

Do I need to vacuum after wire brushing?

Yes. A wire brush loosens material but leaves it in the crack or patch area. Vacuum the debris out immediately after brushing and before placing any filler, or the loosened dust simply becomes a bond breaker between the repair and the slab.

Can a wire brush replace grinding for coating prep?

No. A Hyde wire brush is a spot tool for cracks, joints and patch areas. Preparing an entire slab for a coating requires diamond grinding or shot blasting to create a consistent mechanical profile across the whole floor.
