Good to know

  • Primer performance is decided by prep. Grind or shot blast to profile, patch, then vacuum. A primer applied over laitance or an old sealer bonds your system to the weakest layer on the slab.
  • Respect the recoat window. Most two component primers must be coated within a stated time or the surface has to be abraded before the next coat goes on.
  • A primer is not a moisture vapor barrier. Test the slab and add a dedicated vapor barrier where the readings call for one.
  • Mix ratio, coverage rate and moisture limits are on the technical data sheet, available on request at 817-676-6793.
  • Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. At 7 gallons per kit, multi kit orders normally move by freight. Call 817-676-6793.

About the Polycoat Products Polyprime U Kit

Polycoat Products Polyprime U is the primer in a Polycoat system build, supplied as a two component kit of 5 gallons plus 2 gallons. The product name identifies it as a primer, and the primer is the coat that decides whether the rest of the build stays attached to the deck.

System position is the first coat. Under it goes the prepared substrate: ground, shot blasted or otherwise profiled, patched, clean and dry to whatever the data sheet requires. Over it goes the base or membrane coat of the system it belongs to, and then the wear or traffic coat. Everything above the primer is riding on the bond the primer makes.

The practical reasons to use a system primer rather than skipping it are consistent. It grips the substrate, it evens out absorption so the coat above lays down at a uniform build instead of flashing dull over porous patches, and it reduces pinholing from air pushing out of the slab as the surface warms. Skipping the primer to save a day is the most expensive shortcut in this trade, because you cannot fix a bond failure without taking the floor back off.

Seven gallons of mixed primer covers meaningful square footage, but the actual rate depends entirely on how porous and how aggressively profiled the substrate is. Mix ratio, coverage, pot life, recoat window and moisture limits are on the Polycoat Products technical data sheet, available on request. Call 817-676-6793 and we will send it and confirm the rest of the system.

What it is used for

  • Priming prepared concrete ahead of a Polycoat deck or traffic coating
  • Evening out absorption on slabs with mixed porosity
  • Waterproofing and traffic coating system builds
  • Recoat projects needing a bond coat over prepared substrate

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

What is Polycoat Polyprime U used for?

Polycoat Products Polyprime U is the primer coat in a Polycoat system, supplied as a two component kit of 5 gallons plus 2 gallons. It goes down first on prepared substrate to establish adhesion and even out absorption, with the base or membrane coat and then the traffic coat applied over it.

Do I have to prep the concrete before applying Polyprime U?

Yes. Polycoat Products Polyprime U needs mechanically prepared substrate, meaning ground or shot blasted to profile, patched and vacuumed clean. Priming over laitance, curing compound or an old sealer bonds the whole system to a layer that will release under traffic no matter how good the coating is.

What is the mix ratio for Polycoat Polyprime U?

The mix ratio and full application detail for Polycoat Products Polyprime U are on the manufacturer technical data sheet, available on request. We do not publish figures we cannot source for a two component primer, since off ratio material will not develop its bond. Call 817-676-6793 for the sheet.

How much area will a Polyprime U kit prime?

Coverage for Polycoat Products Polyprime U depends heavily on substrate porosity, because a freshly ground open slab absorbs far more primer than a tight, previously coated surface. The technical data sheet lists the rate. Call 817-676-6793 with the square footage and we will size the order.

Is Polyprime U a moisture barrier?

Treat Polycoat Products Polyprime U as a bonding primer rather than a moisture vapor barrier. If a slab moisture test comes back high, add a dedicated moisture vapor barrier product to the build. Check the primer data sheet for its stated substrate moisture limits before you schedule the work.
