Good to know

  • Test before you decide. A slab moisture test tells you whether a vapor barrier is needed, and skipping the test is how coatings end up blistering six months after handover.
  • This is the first coat, under everything. It goes on prepared concrete, then your primer or base coat goes over it.
  • Green concrete is the fast track use case. It is formulated for adhesion to freshly poured or damp slabs, which is what lets a coating go down before a slab has fully dried out.
  • A moisture vapor barrier is not a substitute for prep. The slab still has to be mechanically profiled, patched and vacuumed before the barrier goes down.
  • Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight on large or pallet orders.

About the TCS Epoxy MVB 3gal Kit

TCS Epoxy MVB is a moisture vapor barrier system for green and damp concrete, supplied clear in 3 gallon kits. It goes down first, forms a durable impermeable layer and blocks vapor transmission so it does not destroy whatever is applied over it.

Moisture driven failure is the most expensive problem in this trade because it happens after the job is finished and paid for. Vapor pushing up through a slab collects under a coating, an adhesive or a flooring system and breaks the bond, and it shows up as blisters, bubbles or sheets of coating letting go weeks or months later. Nothing about the install looks wrong on the day. The slab was simply wetter than anyone tested for.

The two conditions this is built for are green concrete and damp concrete. Green concrete is a fresh pour that has not finished releasing water, and waiting the traditional 28 days is often not on the table when a general contractor is holding a schedule. Damp concrete is an existing slab, usually on grade without a functioning vapor retarder underneath, that is going to keep pushing moisture forever. Its formulation is built for strong adhesion to freshly poured or damp concrete, which is what makes fast track work possible.

In system position, it is the very first coat. Under it is prepared concrete. Over it goes the primer or base coat of your system, then the broadcast and topcoat, or the adhesive and flooring on a resilient job. Test the slab before you decide you need it. Mix ratio, coverage and recoat windows are on the technical data sheet, available on request at 817-676-6793.

What it is used for

  • Coating green concrete on fast track construction schedules
  • Slabs on grade with no functioning vapor retarder
  • High humidity and moisture exposed environments
  • Under adhesives for resilient and hardwood flooring
  • Basements and below grade slabs

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

When do I need a moisture vapor barrier under a floor coating?

Use TCS Epoxy MVB when a slab moisture test comes back high, when the concrete is green and has not finished drying, or when the slab is on grade without a working vapor retarder underneath. Vapor pushing through a slab breaks the bond of coatings and adhesives applied over it.

Can TCS Epoxy MVB be applied to new concrete?

Yes. TCS Epoxy MVB is engineered for strong adhesion to freshly poured or damp concrete, which is exactly the green concrete case on fast track jobs where waiting for a slab to fully dry is not an option. Confirm the minimum slab age and condition on the technical data sheet.

What goes over TCS Epoxy MVB?

TCS Epoxy MVB is the first coat in the build, so the primer or base coat of your coating system goes over it, followed by the broadcast and topcoat. On resilient or hardwood work, the flooring adhesive goes over it instead. Check the recoat window on the data sheet before scheduling.

Does a vapor barrier replace grinding the slab?

No. TCS Epoxy MVB still needs mechanically prepared concrete underneath, meaning ground or shot blasted to profile, patched and vacuumed clean. A vapor barrier stops moisture transmission, it does not create adhesion to a slab that is still covered in laitance, sealer or curing compound.

How much does a 3 gallon TCS Epoxy MVB kit cover?

Coverage for TCS Epoxy MVB is governed by the film build required to form a continuous impermeable layer plus the porosity and profile of the prepared slab, so it varies by job. The technical data sheet carries the rate. Call 817-676-6793 with your square footage and we will size the order.
