Good to know

  • The coverage rate is the reason to buy it. At over 535 sq ft per gallon, a single coat replaces multiple coats of a conventional topcoat, which cuts both material cost and application labor on large floors.
  • Low sheen is a functional choice, not just an aesthetic one. It masks scuffing, tire tracking and wear patterns that a gloss finish would highlight on an industrial slab.
  • Aliphatic urethane holds color and gloss under UV where epoxy ambers, which makes it the correct finish for floors near daylight or under strong lighting.
  • The 4 gallon configuration is a special order. Call 817-676-6793 to place the order and confirm lead time before you commit an install date.
  • Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight on large or pallet orders.

About the Smith's Hi-Ware 90 Urethane Kit

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is the topcoat you specify when the floor is going to take a beating. It is a low odor, 90 percent solids aliphatic urethane built for high traffic and heavy industrial environments, with abrasion, stain and chemical resistance aimed at forklift traffic, hydraulic fluids and harsh chemicals.

The headline number is coverage. It covers over 535 square feet per gallon, and one coat outperforms multiple coats of a traditional topcoat. On a large industrial floor that changes the math twice: less material to buy and fewer passes to apply, which is where the labor cost actually lives on a warehouse sized slab. The finish is a professional low sheen, chosen deliberately because low sheen hides wear patterns, scuffing and tire tracking far better than a gloss on a floor that is going to be used hard.

System position is the final coat. Under it goes a cured base or body coat, epoxy or otherwise, prepared to whatever the data sheet requires. Nothing goes over it. Aliphatic urethane is the chemistry class that holds gloss and color under UV, which is why it is the standard finish where an epoxy alone would amber and chalk.

One ordering note: the 4 gallon configuration is a special order item and has to be placed by phone. The kit is supplied as 4 gallons plus 1.15 gallon. Mix ratio, pot life, recoat window and return to service timing are on the technical data sheet, available on request. Call 817-676-6793 to order and to confirm lead time before you schedule the install.

What it is used for

  • Warehouse and distribution floors with forklift traffic
  • Heavy industrial manufacturing floors
  • Maintenance shops exposed to hydraulic fluid and solvents
  • Large square footage floors where coverage rate drives cost
  • Floors where a low sheen finish is wanted to hide wear

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

How much does Smith's Hi-Wear 90S cover per gallon?

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S covers over 535 square feet per gallon, and the manufacturer states that a single coat outperforms multiple coats of a traditional topcoat. That coverage rate is the main reason it is specified on large industrial floors, since it cuts both material and application labor.

What is Smith's Hi-Wear 90S used for?

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is a 90 percent solids aliphatic urethane topcoat for high traffic and heavy industrial floors. Its abrasion, stain and chemical resistance is aimed at forklift traffic, hydraulic fluids and harsh chemicals, and it finishes in a low sheen that helps hide wear patterns.

Will Smith's Hi-Wear 90S yellow in sunlight?

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is an aliphatic urethane, the chemistry class that holds color and gloss under ultraviolet exposure rather than ambering the way epoxy does. That is why urethane is used as the finish coat over epoxy body coats on floors near daylight, glass frontage or strong lighting.

Why choose a low sheen topcoat over a gloss?

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is finished in a low sheen because it helps hide wear patterns on floors that get used hard. Gloss reflects light in a way that highlights every scuff, tire mark and traffic lane, and on a warehouse floor that means the coating looks worn long before it has actually failed.

How do I order the 4 gallon Smith's Hi-Wear 90S kit?

The 4 gallon configuration of Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is a special order item, so it is placed by phone rather than added to a cart. Call 817-676-6793 and we will confirm lead time, packaging and freight before you commit the material to a scheduled install date.

What goes under Smith's Hi-Wear 90S?

Smith's Hi-Wear 90S is a topcoat, so it goes over a cured base or body coat, commonly an epoxy body coat on an industrial floor, prepared as the technical data sheet specifies. Nothing goes over it. Confirm intercoat compatibility and recoat timing on the data sheet before you schedule.
