Good to know
- Accelerator shortens pot life as well as cure time. Mix smaller batches, stage the crew and plan the pull before you pour.
- Confirm the dose rate against the specific epoxy you are running and the actual slab temperature. Overdosing an accelerator can cost you the working time you needed to broadcast flake.
- An accelerator helps epoxy in the cold, it does not turn it into a polyurea. When the slab is genuinely cold, a polyurea base coat and a polyaspartic topcoat are the more reliable build.
- Slab temperature is what matters, not air temperature. A concrete floor holds cold long after the air in the space has warmed up.
- Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 with freight questions on quantity orders.
About the TCS Epoxy Accelerator
TCS Epoxy Accelerator is an additive that promotes epoxy cure in cold temperature conditions and supports one day floor applications. It is supplied in 1 gallon units. It is not a coating and it does not go on the floor by itself. It is dosed into the epoxy at mixing.
The problem it solves is the fundamental limitation of epoxy chemistry. Epoxy cure is temperature driven, and as the slab gets colder the reaction slows down. Below the manufacturer's minimum, an epoxy will sit there tacky for a day or more or never develop full properties at all. That is why polyurea and polyaspartic have taken so much cold weather work: they cure at temperatures where epoxy will not. An accelerator narrows that gap and keeps an epoxy build workable when the shop or garage is cold.
The second use is scheduling. On a one day floor, every hour of cure sits directly on the critical path. Base coat in the morning, broadcast, then topcoat the same afternoon only works if the base has cured enough to scrape and vacuum. Accelerator is what makes that timeline achievable with an epoxy base rather than forcing a switch to another chemistry.
The tradeoff is working time. Accelerated epoxy sets faster in the pail as well as on the floor, so mix smaller batches, stage the crew before you pour and plan the pull pattern. Dose rate depends on the specific epoxy and the temperature you are working in, and it is on the technical data sheet. Call 817-676-6793 with the product you are running and the conditions, and we will confirm the rate before you order.
What it is used for
- Cold weather epoxy installs in unheated garages and shops
- One day floor systems with an epoxy base coat
- Late season and winter residential work
- Fast track commercial jobs where cure time is on the critical path
Before you order
Work out how much you need
The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.
How much material do I need?
Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.
- Floor area
- 400 sq ft
- Base coat
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Topcoat (1 pass)
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Flake
- about 8 x 25 lb boxes
Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.
Questions about this product
What does TCS Epoxy Accelerator do?
TCS Epoxy Accelerator is an additive dosed into epoxy at mixing to promote cure in cold temperature conditions and to support one day floor applications. It shortens the time between coats, which is what makes a base coat, flake broadcast and topcoat achievable inside a single working day.
How much TCS Epoxy Accelerator do I add?
The dose rate for TCS Epoxy Accelerator depends on the specific epoxy you are running and the temperature you are working in, so we point you to the technical data sheet rather than publish a figure that could be wrong. Call 817-676-6793 with the product and conditions and we will confirm.
Does an epoxy accelerator reduce pot life?
Yes. TCS Epoxy Accelerator speeds the reaction, which means the material sets faster in the pail as well as on the floor. Mix smaller batches, have the crew and tools staged before you pour, and plan the pull pattern, because an accelerated epoxy will not wait while you get organized.
Can I use epoxy in a cold garage with an accelerator?
TCS Epoxy Accelerator is made for cold temperature curing, and it widens the window where an epoxy build is workable. It does not remove the manufacturer's minimum application temperature though. When the slab is genuinely cold, a polyurea base with a polyaspartic topcoat is the safer build.
Does slab temperature or air temperature matter more?
Slab temperature is what drives cure when you are using TCS Epoxy Accelerator or any epoxy, because concrete holds cold long after the air in a space has been heated. Take a surface temperature reading on the slab itself rather than trusting a thermostat on the wall before you start mixing.
