Good to know

  • This is the base coat for jobs epoxy cannot be scheduled for. Polyurea keeps curing at temperatures where an epoxy base coat stalls.
  • Elastomeric means the film stretches rather than cracks, which helps on slabs with seasonal movement and hairline cracking.
  • Working time is shorter than an epoxy. Mix small batches, stage the flake and the crew, and plan the pull before you pour.
  • At 100 percent solids essentially everything you mix stays on the floor, so coverage tracks close to the theoretical rate at a given film build.
  • Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight on large or pallet orders.

About the Tex Tuff Polyurea Kit

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea is a two component, 100 percent solids elastomeric system designed for use as a base coat. It is supplied clear in 3 gallon kits. It offers exceptional adhesion to numerous substrates and performs reliably across a broad range of temperatures.

That temperature range is the reason polyurea base coats have taken over so much of the residential and light commercial market. Epoxy is a good base coat when the slab is warm and the schedule allows a day between coats. When the garage is 45 degrees in November, epoxy slows to a crawl and the job stops. Polyurea keeps curing, which means the floor can be based, broadcast and topcoated in a single day in conditions where an epoxy build simply cannot be scheduled.

Elastomeric is the second useful word. A rigid coating is brittle in tension, and a slab that moves seasonally will crack it. An elastomeric film stretches instead, which is what lets the coating bridge minor movement rather than telegraph every hairline into the finished floor.

System position is base coat. Under it goes prepared concrete, or a moisture vapor barrier where the slab needs one. Into it goes the decorative flake broadcast while it is wet. Over it, once cured and scraped and vacuumed, goes a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat that supplies the gloss, the UV stability and the wear surface. Being 100 percent solids, essentially everything you mix stays on the floor.

Working time is the tradeoff. Polyurea moves faster than epoxy, so batch small and stage the crew. Mix ratio, pot life, coverage and recoat windows are on the technical data sheet, available on request at 817-676-6793.

What it is used for

  • Base coat for one day flake floor systems
  • Cold weather and late season garage installs
  • Slabs with seasonal movement and hairline cracking
  • Commercial floors needing fast turnaround
  • Base coat over a moisture vapor barrier on damp slabs

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

What is Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea used for?

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea is a two component, 100 percent solids elastomeric system used as a base coat in floor coating builds. It provides exceptional adhesion to numerous substrates and performs reliably across a broad temperature range, which makes it the base coat of choice for cold weather work.

What goes over Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea?

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea is a base coat, so decorative flake is broadcast into it while wet and a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat goes over it once it has cured and the loose chip has been scraped and vacuumed. The topcoat carries the gloss, UV stability and wear surface.

Can Tex Tuff Polyurea be applied in cold weather?

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea is stated to perform reliably across a broad range of temperatures, which is the main reason contractors choose a polyurea base over an epoxy for late season and winter installs. Confirm the specific minimum application temperature on the technical data sheet first.

What does elastomeric mean on a floor coating?

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea is elastomeric, meaning the cured film stretches under stress instead of fracturing the way a rigid coating does. On a slab that moves with the seasons, that flexibility lets the coating bridge minor movement rather than cracking along every hairline in the concrete.

How much floor does a 3 gallon Tex Tuff Polyurea kit cover?

Coverage for Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea depends on the film build and on how porous the prepared slab is, though at 100 percent solids very little is lost to evaporation, so applied coverage tracks close to the theoretical rate. The technical data sheet has the figures for each application.

Is polyurea or epoxy better for a garage floor base coat?

Tex Tuff 200-700 Polyurea cures faster and across a wider temperature range than epoxy, which supports one day installs and cold weather work, and it flexes with the slab. Epoxy gives more working time and more forgiveness for a smaller crew but needs a warm slab and usually a second day.
