Good to know
- Primer only works on prepared concrete. Grind or shot blast to profile, patch the spalls and cracks, then vacuum. Priming over laitance or curing compound just glues your system to a layer that is going to let go.
- Watch the recoat window. Most two component primers have a maximum time before the finish coat has to go on, and blowing past it means abrading the primer before you can continue.
- If the slab has moisture, a primer is not a vapor barrier. Test the slab and use a dedicated moisture vapor barrier product where the readings call for one.

About the Coval® Concrete Primer
Coval Concrete Primer is the first coat in the Coval Technologies concrete floor system. It is supplied as a two part kit, 5 gallons plus 1 gallon, and its job is to bond to prepared concrete and give the finish coat a uniform surface to build on.
System position is straightforward. Under it goes mechanically prepared concrete: ground, shot blasted or otherwise profiled, patched, cleaned and vacuumed. Over it goes Coval Concrete Coat. Primer is the coat that decides whether the floor lasts, because it is the layer actually gripping the slab. Everything above it is only as good as the bond underneath.
A primer also does two things installers underrate. It equalizes absorption on a slab that has hard troweled areas next to porous or patched areas, so the finish coat lays down evenly instead of flashing dull in the thirsty spots. And it reduces outgassing pinholes by filling the surface pores before the heavier coat goes down, which matters on a slab that is warming as the day goes on.
Buy the primer and the coat as a pair. If you are pricing a Coval floor, the primer is not the place to substitute a cheaper generic product, because adhesion and recoat compatibility are engineered around the matched system. Work out how much you need
The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

Is Coval Concrete Primer a moisture vapor barrier?
Treat Coval Concrete Primer as a bonding primer, not as a moisture vapor barrier. If a moisture test on the slab comes back high, specify a dedicated moisture vapor barrier product under the system. Check the primer technical data sheet for its stated moisture limits before you order.
How much does a Coval Concrete Primer kit cover?
Coverage for Coval Concrete Primer is driven by how porous and how aggressively profiled the slab is, since an open, freshly ground surface drinks far more primer than a tight one. Can I use a different primer under Coval Concrete Coat?
We recommend keeping the Coval Concrete Primer and Coval Concrete Coat together as a matched system. Adhesion, recoat timing and intercoat compatibility are engineered around the pairing, and substituting an unrelated primer puts the bond and any manufacturer support at risk.
