Crown 1gal Muriatic Acid

Crown Muriatic Acid in a 1 gallon container is an etchant and cleaner for concrete and masonry. Diluted and applied to a slab it attacks the cement paste at the surface, releasing carbon dioxide and lifting laitance, efflorescence and mineral deposits. That is the job it does well: cleaning masonry, pulling mortar smears off brick, taking hard water and efflorescence off concrete, and cleaning up after a pour.

Be clear about acid etching as coating prep, because the trade argues about it and most suppliers dodge the question. Mechanical diamond grinding is the preferred prep for high-performance coatings. Grinding gives a consistent profile across the whole floor, it removes weak surface material and old coatings rather than reacting with them, it works on hard troweled and power troweled slabs where acid barely bites, and it leaves a dry floor. Acid etching is inconsistent by nature, since it depends on dwell time, dilution, temperature and how absorbent each part of the slab is. It does nothing to oil or grease, which it simply runs off. It will not touch a sealer or a curing compound, and etching over one produces a floor that looks prepped and bonds to nothing. It leaves salts behind that have to be neutralized and rinsed thoroughly, and it puts a large volume of contaminated rinse water on the ground that has to go somewhere.

Where acid still earns a place is masonry cleanup, efflorescence removal, mineral scale, and small or awkward areas where a grinder cannot reach. If you do etch, always add acid to water and never water to acid, rinse to neutral, verify with pH before coating, and let the slab dry fully.

Safety on this one is not boilerplate. Muriatic acid burns skin and eyes and gives off corrosive fumes. Use it outdoors or with strong ventilation, wear chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles or a face shield, boots and covered skin, and use a respirator with cartridges appropriate to acid gas.
