Crown Muriatic Acid

Crown Muriatic Acid, 1 gallon, is a concrete and masonry cleaner and etchant. Diluted in water it reacts with cement paste at the surface, lifting laitance, efflorescence, mortar smears and hard mineral deposits. Used that way it does real work: cleaning brick and block after a pour, pulling white efflorescence off a wall or slab, and knocking down mineral scale.

As coating prep it deserves an honest answer. Mechanical diamond grinding is the preferred method for preparing concrete under a high-performance coating, and most manufacturers say so. Grinding produces the same profile everywhere, removes weak or contaminated surface material, takes off old coatings, sealers and curing compounds, and leaves the slab dry and ready. Acid etching cannot do most of that. It is inconsistent because it depends on dilution, dwell time, temperature and how thirsty each part of the slab is. It does nothing to oil or grease. It will not remove a sealer or curing compound, so etching over one just produces a floor that looks prepped and fails to bond. And it leaves salts behind that have to be neutralized and rinsed out completely, along with a lot of contaminated rinse water that has to be managed.

Where it still makes sense is masonry cleanup, efflorescence, mineral deposits and tight areas a grinder cannot reach. If you do etch, work in small sections, always add acid to water rather than water to acid, rinse thoroughly, neutralize, check pH before you coat, and give the slab time to dry all the way through.

Handle it seriously. Muriatic acid burns skin and eyes and gives off corrosive fumes. Use it outdoors or with strong ventilation. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles or a face shield, boots and covered skin, and a respirator with cartridges suited to acid gas where ventilation is limited.
