Good to know
- Self priming means one less coat and one less day. On a sound, properly profiled slab you can go straight to the binder instead of priming first, which is where the labor savings on this product actually show up.
- Damp is fine, standing water is not. It applies to saturated surface dry concrete, but puddles and free water on the slab still have to be removed before you start.
- Broadcast the vinyl chips to refusal while the binder is wet. The high pigment load is what lets one coat hide the concrete, but it does nothing for you if the flake is not fully embedded.
- The 8355 Accelerator at 6 weight ounces per 2 gallons is the tool for rapid cure. Adding accelerator shortens working time, so mix smaller batches when you use it.
- Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight quotes on pallet orders.
About the Crown Polymers Epoxy Primer 8355 Kit
8355 CrownShield is a two component, high build, high pigment load epoxy binder designed specifically to receive CrownFlake System vinyl chips in 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch sizes. It is the base coat in a flake floor, and it is one of the few base coats that genuinely earns the description self priming.
The two features that decide jobs are moisture tolerance and pigment load. It is formulated as a moisture tolerant epoxy binder and bonds tenaciously to dry or damp concrete, and it can be applied directly to saturated surface dry slabs on grade with no standing water. That is a real advantage on a slab you cannot get bone dry or on a fast track job. Separately, the high pigment load means it hides concrete at 160 to 200 square feet, or 14.9 to 18.9 square meters, in a single coat application. A weaker pigmented binder needs a second pass to hide, and that second pass is labor you are not getting paid for.
Working time is generous enough to cut in, place the material and broadcast the vinyl chips before it starts to grab, which is exactly what a flake install needs. When the schedule calls for a faster turn, CrownShield No. 8355 Accelerator at 6 weight ounces per 2 gallons is available for rapid cure.
On compliance, Crown lists it as VOC compliant in all states and provinces in North America, EPA compliant, and compliant with USDA, FDA and the Food Safety Modernization Act, with ADA slip resistance and LEED requirements addressed. It cures to an inert finish, is low odor during installation, and is designed for both new floors and resurfacing old ones. Over the top goes flake, then a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat.
What it is used for
- Residential and commercial flake floor base coats
- Damp or saturated surface dry slabs on grade
- Resurfacing worn existing floors
- Food handling and processing areas requiring USDA and FDA compliance
- Fast track jobs where a separate primer coat cannot be scheduled
Before you order
Work out how much you need
The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.
How much material do I need?
Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.
- Floor area
- 400 sq ft
- Base coat
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Topcoat (1 pass)
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Flake
- about 8 x 25 lb boxes
Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.
Questions about this product
How much does a 2 gallon Crown 8355 kit cover?
Crown 8355 CrownShield hides concrete between 160 and 200 square feet, that is 14.9 to 18.9 square meters, in a single coat application thanks to its high pigment load. Porous or aggressively profiled slabs land at the lower end of that range, tight hard troweled slabs at the higher end.
Can Crown 8355 be applied to damp concrete?
Yes. Crown 8355 CrownShield is formulated as a moisture tolerant epoxy binder that bonds tenaciously to dry or damp concrete and can be applied directly to saturated surface dry slabs on grade, provided there is no standing water. That makes it useful on slabs you cannot get fully dry.
Does Crown 8355 need a separate primer?
No. Crown 8355 CrownShield is self priming, so on a properly prepared slab it goes down as the first coat and doubles as the flake binder. That removes a coat and a day from the schedule compared with a system that needs a dedicated primer before the base coat.
What flake size does Crown 8355 take?
Crown 8355 CrownShield is specially designed to receive CrownFlake System vinyl chips in 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch sizes. The binder is built high enough to hold that chip standing in the film, which is what gives full flake rejection coverage and a proper broadcast to refusal.
How do I speed up the cure on Crown 8355?
Crown offers CrownShield No. 8355 Accelerator, added at 6 weight ounces per 2 gallons, when rapid cure is required on Crown 8355 CrownShield. Accelerated material has less working time, so mix in smaller batches and stage the crew before you pour if you are using it.
Is Crown 8355 approved for food facilities?
Crown lists 8355 CrownShield as complying with USDA, FDA and Food Safety Modernization Act requirements, along with ADA slip resistance, LEED requirements and VOC and EPA compliance, and it cures to an inert finish. Confirm the specific listings against your facility spec before you order.
