Good to know

  • This is the cold weather answer. Polyurea cures across a wide temperature range where epoxy stalls, which is why it is the base coat of choice for winter and unheated space installs.
  • Working time is short compared with epoxy. Mix small batches, stage the crew and have the flake and tools in hand before you pour.
  • 97 percent solids means almost everything you mix stays on the floor, so coverage is close to the theoretical rate at a given mil thickness rather than dropping as solvent flashes off.
  • Pair it with a polyaspartic topcoat for a same day turnaround. Polyurea base plus polyaspartic clear is the standard one day garage build.
  • Ships as a regulated liquid under ground shipping rules. Call 817-676-6793 for freight on pallet orders.

About the Crown Polymers 8240 Kit

8240 CrownBase is a high performance polyurea that works as a primer, a base coat and a coating in its own right. It is low viscosity, low odor and 97 percent solids, and it is supplied in 3 gallon kits. Crown lists it as VOC compliant in all states and provinces in North America.

The reason contractors move to a polyurea base is temperature range and speed. It is designed for challenging flooring and wall surfacing environments across a wide range of temperature and climatic conditions, which is the polite way of saying it will cure in a cold garage in December when an epoxy base coat would sit there wet. Combined with a polyaspartic topcoat, a polyurea base is the backbone of the one day floor system: prime and base in the morning, broadcast flake, scrape and vacuum, topcoat in the afternoon, walk on it that night.

System position is flexible. Low viscosity makes it a genuine penetrating primer on ground concrete. Built as a base coat it takes a flake or quartz broadcast. Used as a coating on its own it brings the adhesion, abrasion, impact and chemical resistance the product is sold on, which is why it turns up in commercial, industrial and institutional facilities and on wall surfacing as well as floors.

The tradeoff against epoxy is working time. Polyurea moves fast. Batch small, keep the crew staged and plan the pull before you mix. Mix ratio, pot life, recoat window and coverage rates are on the Crown Polymers technical data sheet, available on request at 817-676-6793.

What it is used for

  • One day flake floor systems with a polyaspartic topcoat
  • Cold weather installs where epoxy will not cure
  • Commercial, industrial and institutional floors
  • Wall surfacing in challenging environments
  • Penetrating primer on freshly ground concrete

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

What is Crown 8240 CrownBase used for?

Crown 8240 CrownBase is a 97 percent solids polyurea used as a primer, a base coat or a standalone coating on floors and walls. It is low viscosity and low odor, delivers adhesion, abrasion, impact and chemical resistance, and is designed for challenging commercial, industrial and institutional environments.

Can Crown 8240 be applied in cold weather?

Crown 8240 CrownBase is designed for a wide range of temperature and climatic conditions, which is the main reason contractors specify a polyurea base coat over an epoxy for winter work. Confirm the specific minimum application temperature on the technical data sheet before scheduling a cold install.

What is the difference between polyurea and epoxy for a base coat?

Crown 8240 CrownBase is a polyurea, which cures faster and across a much wider temperature range than epoxy, letting a floor be based, broadcast and topcoated in one day. Epoxy gives longer working time and more forgiveness, but it slows badly on a cold slab and cannot support a same day turnaround.

Does Crown 8240 need a topcoat?

Crown 8240 CrownBase can function as a coating on its own, but in a decorative floor it is the base under a broadcast of flake or quartz and gets a clear polyaspartic or urethane topcoat over it. That topcoat carries the gloss, the UV stability and the final wear surface.

How much floor does a 3 gallon Crown 8240 kit cover?

Coverage for Crown 8240 CrownBase changes with system position, since a penetrating primer pass over ground concrete stretches much further than a built base coat carrying a flake broadcast. At 97 percent solids very little is lost to evaporation. The technical data sheet has the rate per build.

Is Crown 8240 VOC compliant?

Crown lists 8240 CrownBase as VOC compliant in all states and provinces in North America, so it clears regional VOC limits without a jurisdiction check on every job. It is also a low odor formula, which makes it usable in occupied commercial and institutional buildings during business hours.
