Crown Xylene Slow Dry Solvent

Crown Xylene is the slow drying solvent, sold here in 1 gallon and 5 gallon. Where acetone flashes off almost immediately, xylene stays wet, and that difference decides which one belongs on your job.

Xylene is what you reach for when a solvent-based coating, sealer or adhesive names it, when you need a wet edge to hold long enough to lay off a section, and when a cleanup job needs the solvent to actually sit and soften something instead of evaporating out from under you. It is also the common cleanup solvent for equipment used with solvent-based sealers, where acetone flashes too quickly to do the work.

Say plainly where it does not belong. Xylene is not for water-based coatings. It is not a general purpose thinner you add to whatever is in the pail. Thin only when a product's technical data sheet names xylene and gives a ratio, because the wrong solvent or the wrong amount will change cure, gloss and film build. It is not a degreaser for a contaminated slab and it is not surface prep. Diamond grinding is what prepares concrete for a coating, and no solvent substitutes for it. Because xylene evaporates slowly, it can also be trapped in a film or in porous concrete, so give a xylene-wiped surface time to release before you coat over it.

Handle it accordingly. Xylene is flammable and the vapor is heavier and more persistent than acetone vapor, which means an enclosed space stays loaded with it longer. Use strong ventilation, keep ignition sources away, wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection, and use a respirator with cartridges appropriate for organic vapor when working in confined areas. Xylene attacks some plastics and rubbers, so check hoses, sprayer seals and buckets before you pour it in.
