Good to know

  • Stain reads dramatically darker and richer once sealed. Approve sample boards after they are sealed, not before.
  • Anything that blocks absorption blocks color. Old sealer, curing compound, glue residue and power-troweled burnish all have to come off first.
  • Water-based stain gives more uniform results than acid stain, but it still shows slab history. If the client wants one flat color with no variation, they want a pigmented coating, not a stain.
  • Sold in 1 quart units. Buy the full job in one order so you are working from consistent material across the whole floor.

About the Concrete Stain In-Fluence by Duravel

In-Fluence is Duravel's water-based, semi-transparent concrete stain, sold in 1 quart units in six colors: Chestnut, Coffee, Dolphin, Hazel, Steel and Willow. It colors cured concrete and cementitious overlays, and it is what you reach for when the floor needs depth and movement instead of a flat painted look.

Understand what a stain is before you buy one. A stain is not paint and it is not a pigmented coating. Color sits in the surface and lets the concrete underneath keep showing through, so slab variation, trowel marks, old patches and repair work all still read after the color goes down. That variation is the product working correctly, not a defect. In-Fluence is a water-based stain rather than a reactive acid stain, so color does not depend on a chemical reaction with free lime in the slab. You get more predictable, more repeatable results than acid gives you while keeping the variegated, translucent character that makes decorative concrete read as concrete. There is also no harsh acid fume on the jobsite and no acid residue to chase at cleanup.

Duravel builds In-Fluence with UV-stable pigments, so it works indoors and out. That matters on patios, pool decks and driveways, where a colorant that is not UV stable will fade or shift within a season or two.

Stain is a color step, not a protection step. In-Fluence has to be sealed. Left bare, stained concrete picks up oil, water spotting and traffic wear fast, and there is no wear layer over the color. Choose the sealer at the same time you choose the color, because the sealer is what sets the final look. A topical acrylic will darken and enrich the stain and add sheen. Always pull a sample on the actual slab, seal that sample, and approve the color wet-looking rather than dry. Dry stained concrete looks nothing like sealed stained concrete, and that gap is the single most common cause of a color complaint.

What it is used for

  • Coloring a Duravel TSO or TCO overlay before sealing
  • Interior stained concrete floors in homes, retail and restaurants
  • Exterior patios and pool decks where UV stability matters
  • Refreshing color on existing stained concrete during a recoat
  • Accent and antiquing work on stamped or textured concrete

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

Is In-Fluence an acid stain or a water-based stain?

Duravel In-Fluence is a water-based, semi-transparent concrete stain, not a reactive acid stain. It does not rely on a chemical reaction with the slab, so the color is more predictable and repeatable, with no harsh acid fumes and no acid residue to clean up afterward.

Do I have to seal concrete after staining it?

Yes. Duravel In-Fluence stain adds color but no protection, so a sealer is a required step. Unsealed stained concrete picks up oil, water spotting and traffic wear quickly because there is no wear layer over the color. Choose the sealer before you commit to a color.

Will the stain look the same after it is sealed?

No. Duravel In-Fluence stain looks noticeably darker and richer once a sealer goes over it, the same way wet concrete looks darker than dry concrete. Always seal your sample board and get the customer to approve the sealed sample, not the bare stained one.

Can In-Fluence stain be used outdoors?

Yes. Duravel In-Fluence uses UV-stable pigments and is made for interior or exterior use, which is why it suits patios, pool decks and driveways. Pair it with an exterior-rated UV-stable sealer, because a sealer that yellows will ruin the color regardless of how stable the pigment is.

What can I stain with it besides bare concrete?

Duravel In-Fluence stains cured concrete and cementitious overlays, so it works over Duravel TCO and TSO overlay surfaces as well as existing slabs. The surface has to be clean, absorbent and free of old sealer or curing compound, or the stain cannot get in.

Why does my stained floor look blotchy?

Variation is normal for Duravel In-Fluence because a semi-transparent stain reveals what the concrete underneath is doing. Uneven absorption from patches, glue residue, burnished troweling or leftover sealer concentrates it. Proper profiling and cleaning before staining is what controls how much variation you get.
