Good to know

  • It is a concentrate. Dilution depends on whether you are degreasing or profiling, so follow Duravel's instructions for the task rather than mixing one ratio for everything.
  • No neutralization step means you can move to the next trade or the next coat sooner, which is where the real labor savings show up on a big slab.
  • It still contains acids. Full PPE, eye protection and ventilation apply regardless of how it compares with muriatic.
  • Prep failure is the root cause of most coating and stain complaints. Grease left in the slab is a delamination you have already paid for.
  • Rinse and remove residue thoroughly, and let the slab dry to the condition your coating or stain requires before proceeding.

About the Duravel - ECP Concentrated Cleaner

Duravel ECP is a concentrated cleaner and concrete profiler built with powerful detergents, degreasers and acids. It preps concrete for overlays, stains and coatings, it is safer to work with than muriatic acid, it is eco-friendly for most plants and aquatic life, and it does not require neutralization, which saves both time and labor. It is sold in 1 gallon and 5 gallon units of concentrate.

The no-neutralization part is the labor argument. A traditional muriatic etch means acid, then a neutralizing wash, then verification, then rinse and removal, with a crew standing around waiting between steps and a slurry nobody wants to deal with. ECP takes the neutralization step out of that sequence. On a large slab that is real hours off the schedule, and on a residential job it can mean prep and coat in the same visit instead of two trips.

ECP does two jobs at once, which is why it belongs in the truck rather than just in the shop. The detergent and degreaser side pulls oil, grease and general contamination out of the surface. The acid side profiles the concrete, opening it up so that whatever goes on next can actually grab. That combination matters because prep failure is almost always the real cause when a coating peels or a stain goes blotchy. A coating cannot bond through grease, and a stain cannot get into a slab that is sealed, burnished or contaminated.

Safer than muriatic acid is not a small claim on a jobsite. Muriatic fumes are miserable to work around, hard on equipment and hard on anything green near the slab. ECP is formulated to be more workable and eco-friendly for most plants and aquatic life, which matters on residential exteriors where the runoff goes into a lawn or a flower bed.

It is a concentrate, so dilute per Duravel's instructions for the job in front of you. Cleaning oil off a shop floor and profiling for a stain are not the same task. Wear proper PPE. It contains acids.

What it is used for

  • Profiling a slab before a Duravel TCO, TSO or TRO overlay
  • Cleaning and opening concrete before staining
  • Degreasing shop, garage and warehouse floors before coating
  • Exterior prep on driveways and patios where runoff hits landscaping
  • Cleaning concrete before a maintenance sealer recoat

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

Does Duravel ECP need to be neutralized after use?

No. Duravel ECP is formulated so that no neutralization step is required, unlike a traditional muriatic acid etch. That removes an entire wash, verify and rinse cycle from the prep sequence, which saves time and labor and often lets a crew prep and coat in the same visit.

How is ECP different from muriatic acid?

Duravel ECP is a concentrated cleaner and profiler made with detergents, degreasers and acids, and it is safer to work with than muriatic acid while being eco-friendly for most plants and aquatic life. It also cleans and degreases, which muriatic acid does not do.

What can I use ECP to prep for?

Duravel ECP preps concrete for overlays, stains and coatings. It cleans oil and grease out of the surface while its acid content profiles the slab so the next product can bond or absorb. That combination makes it a single prep step ahead of most decorative concrete work.

How much do I dilute ECP?

Duravel ECP is a concentrate and the dilution depends on the job, since heavy degreasing on a shop floor and light profiling before a stain are different tasks. Follow Duravel's mixing instructions for your application, or call Twin Coating Supplies at 817-676-6793 to confirm.

Is ECP safe around landscaping?

Duravel ECP is described as eco-friendly for most plants and aquatic life, which is a meaningful advantage on residential exteriors where runoff from a driveway or patio ends up in a lawn or planting bed. It still contains acids, so use proper PPE and control runoff sensibly.

Do I still need to grind if I use ECP?

Duravel ECP cleans and profiles concrete chemically, which handles many jobs. Heavily contaminated, coated or badly damaged slabs, and coatings that require an aggressive mechanical profile, still call for grinding or shot blasting. Match the prep to what the coating manufacturer requires for the system you are installing.
