Coval® Matting Agent

Coval Matting Agent is the sheen control component for the Coval sealer and top coat line. It is sold in 1 gallon and 5 gallon units and is added to the coating rather than applied on its own. Its job is straightforward: take a finish that would otherwise cure out glossy and bring it down toward satin or matte.

Sheen is a real decision, not a taste question. Gloss makes color look deeper and makes a polished or stained floor look wet and expensive, and it is easier to sell in a showroom or a retail space. Gloss also shows every scratch, every scuff line and every bit of dust, and it can be genuinely slick-looking under bright lighting, which makes some owners nervous. A lower sheen hides traffic marks, hides dust between cleanings and photographs better under skylights and storefront glass. On big open commercial floors and on residential interiors where the owner does not want a mirror, matte or satin is very often the right call.

Because the matting agent goes into the coating, the ratio you use is what determines the final sheen, and that ratio belongs to the specific Coval product you are mixing it into. Mix a sample and cure it before you commit the floor. Sheen judged from a wet pail is not sheen judged from a cured surface, and lighting in the actual space changes the read again. One 2 foot by 2 foot cured sample under the building's own lights settles the argument faster than any conversation about matte versus satin.
