Good to know

  • Single component means no mix ratio and no pot life clock, which changes how you schedule crews compared with a two-part urethane.
  • It is applied with an acetone pump sprayer. Have the right sprayer and solvent-rated seals on site before the day of the pour.
  • Any old wax, guard or floor finish has to come off first. UTC bonds to the surface, and it can only bond to what is actually there.
  • As a topical coat, UTC is the sacrificial wear layer. Renewing the top coat on schedule is far cheaper than repairing the decorative floor under it.
  • Add Coval Matting Agent if the job calls for satin or matte instead of the standard gloss.

About the Coval® Ultimate Top Coat

Coval Ultimate Top Coat, or UTC, is a single-component, high-performance coating that protects decorative surfaces from wear and harsh chemicals. It goes on with an acetone pump sprayer and bonds directly to epoxy, terrazzo, polished, stained or sealed concrete floors and to countertops. It is sold in 1 gallon and 5 gallon units in a gloss sheen.

Single component matters on a jobsite. There is no A side and B side, no ratio to get wrong under time pressure, and no pot life clock running the moment you mix. You are spraying material out of a pail, which changes how you staff a job and how you handle a partial pail at the end of the day.

UTC is a topical top coat, so be clear-eyed about what that means. It forms a protective layer over the surface you put it on, which is exactly what you want on a decorative floor: the wear happens in the top coat instead of in the epoxy, the stain or the polish underneath. It also means UTC is the sacrificial layer, and the sacrificial layer is the part you renew over time rather than tearing out the floor. That is the correct trade in almost every decorative application, and it is why a stained or flake floor with a real top coat outlives one without.

The maintenance argument is the strongest part of this product. Coval says UTC reduces maintenance, makes cleaning simple, and eliminates the need for waxes, guards, strippers and harsh cleaners. For a facility running a floor care program, that removes an entire recurring line item along with the labor, equipment and chemical handling that comes with it. On a bid, the ongoing maintenance savings is frequently the argument that closes the job, not the coating spec.

Surface prep still decides the outcome. UTC bonds to sound, clean, properly prepared surfaces. Contamination, residual wax, guard product or floor finish under the coating is a bond failure waiting to show up in the first traffic lane.

What it is used for

  • Top coating epoxy and flake floors in garages, showrooms and shops
  • Protecting stained concrete after the color coat and sealer
  • Terrazzo and polished concrete in commercial buildings
  • Concrete countertops and vertical decorative surfaces
  • Replacing a wax and burnish maintenance program on a commercial floor

Before you order

Work out how much you need

The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.

How much material do I need?

Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.

Floor area
400 sq ft
Base coat
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Topcoat (1 pass)
3.1 to 3.4 gal
Flake
about 8 x 25 lb boxes

Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.

Questions about this product

What surfaces does Coval Ultimate Top Coat bond to?

Coval UTC bonds directly to epoxy, terrazzo, polished concrete, stained concrete and sealed concrete floors, as well as countertops. It is built as a finish layer over decorative surfaces, so the surface underneath must be sound, clean and free of wax or old floor finish.

How is Coval UTC applied?

Coval Ultimate Top Coat is applied with an acetone pump sprayer. It is a single-component coating, so there is no A and B side to mix, no ratio to get wrong and no pot life running against you once the pail is open, which makes it easier to staff and schedule.

Is Coval UTC a penetrating sealer or a topical coating?

Coval UTC is a topical coating. It forms a protective layer over the surface rather than soaking into the slab, so it takes the wear and chemical exposure instead of the epoxy, stain or polish underneath. That protective layer is renewed over time rather than the floor being redone.

Do I still need to wax or use a floor guard after applying UTC?

No. Coval Ultimate Top Coat eliminates the need for waxes, guards, strippers and harsh cleaners, which is a large part of its value on commercial floors. Facilities running a wax and burnish program can drop that recurring labor, equipment and chemical cost entirely.

Can I get Coval UTC in a lower sheen than gloss?

Coval UTC is supplied in gloss. To bring the finished sheen down toward satin or matte, use Coval Matting Agent, which is mixed into the coating before it is applied. Cure a sample under the building's own lighting before committing the whole floor.

Can Coval UTC go over stained concrete?

Yes. Coval UTC bonds to stained concrete and is a sensible finish layer over a stain job, since stain adds color but no protection. Expect the stain color to read deeper and richer under the gloss top coat, so approve sample boards after top coating.
