Good to know
- Thin overlays live or die on bond. Clean, sound and properly profiled substrate first, using something like Duravel ECP.
- An overlay follows the slab underneath it. Moving cracks and failing concrete have to be dealt with before you place material, not after.
- TCO is the fine, smooth end of the overlay family. For forklift traffic and heavy duty restoration, use a traffic-rated mix such as Duravel TRO instead.
- Cured overlay can be stained and must be sealed. Budget stain and sealer into the job, not just the bag count.
- Sold in 40 lb bags. Store dry and off the ground. Cementitious material that has taken on moisture is scrap.
About the Duravel TCO™ - Thin Concrete Overlay Gray
Duravel TCO is a flexible thin concrete overlay for interior or exterior surfaces, supplied here in gray in 40 lb bags. It renews worn concrete with a smooth finish or a custom texture, and it is the product to specify for microcement work on floors and walls.
An overlay is not a coating and the distinction changes the job. A coating is a film over concrete. An overlay is cementitious material that becomes the new wearing surface, which means a tired, scarred, patched slab can be rebuilt rather than covered up and hoped for. On a floor that has been through several tenants and several repairs, that is usually the only path to a finish anybody would accept.
TCO is the thin, fine end of the overlay family. It is what you use when the goal is a smooth, jointless, contemporary surface: microcement floors, feature walls, stair treads and vertical work where a coarse mix would look wrong and sit too proud. Because it is flexible, it suits applications where a rigid, brittle skim would be the weak point. The same material can be finished smooth or worked into a custom texture, so the look is decided by the trowel and the crew rather than by buying a different product.
Interior or exterior is stated by Duravel, which is a real advantage. Continuing the same microcement finish from an interior living space out to a patio without switching materials is exactly the detail architects ask for and most products cannot do.
Bond is everything with a thin overlay. Thin material has no mass to hide behind, so a clean, sound, properly profiled substrate is not optional. Duravel ECP cleans and profiles concrete ahead of overlays. Address moving cracks and failing concrete before you overlay, because an overlay follows the slab it is bonded to. Cured TCO takes stain and needs to be sealed like any decorative concrete surface. Follow Duravel's mixing, thickness and cure instructions for your installation.
What it is used for
- Microcement floors in residential and commercial interiors
- Feature walls and vertical decorative surfaces
- Renewing worn interior concrete with a smooth continuous finish
- Carrying an interior microcement look out onto an exterior patio
- Stair treads, hearths and detail work where a thin flexible mix is needed
Before you order
Work out how much you need
The most common ordering mistake in this category is buying by the gallon instead of by the floor. Coverage changes with porosity, profile and whether the coat is a base, a broadcast or a topcoat. Put the slab dimensions in and get a range rather than a single number.
How much material do I need?
Enter the slab. We will give you a range, because porosity and surface profile change real coverage.
- Floor area
- 400 sq ft
- Base coat
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Topcoat (1 pass)
- 3.1 to 3.4 gal
- Flake
- about 8 x 25 lb boxes
Base coat, flake broadcast to rejection, then a clear topcoat. Order roughly 10% over on a first job.
Questions about this product
What is Duravel TCO used for?
Duravel TCO is a flexible thin concrete overlay for interior or exterior floors and walls. It renews worn concrete with a smooth finish or a custom texture and is the product used for microcement applications, where the goal is a continuous contemporary surface rather than a coating film.
Is an overlay the same as a coating?
No. Duravel TCO is a cementitious overlay, which becomes the new wearing surface of the floor, while a coating is a film applied over existing concrete. That is why an overlay can rebuild a scarred, patched slab that no coating would look acceptable over.
Can Duravel TCO be used outside?
Yes. Duravel TCO is rated for interior or exterior surfaces, which means the same microcement finish can run from an interior floor out to a patio without changing materials. Exterior installations still need proper substrate prep, correct curing and a suitable exterior sealer.
Can TCO go on walls?
Yes. Duravel TCO is made for floors and walls, and its thin flexible formulation is what makes vertical microcement and feature wall work practical. Vertical application depends heavily on substrate prep and on working the material within the manufacturer's instructions.
Do I need to seal a TCO overlay?
Yes. Duravel TCO produces a cementitious surface, and like any decorative concrete it needs a sealer to resist staining, spills and traffic wear. Choose a topical acrylic such as Duravel DV-30 or DV-WB depending on interior or exterior use and the sheen the customer wants.
Will TCO fix cracks in my slab?
Not on its own. Duravel TCO is a thin overlay and it follows the concrete it is bonded to, so an active or moving crack will telegraph through. Repair and address structural or moving cracks properly before placing any overlay material over them.
